SFDS Teachers Retreat: Cool Apps

Scoop it news

If we, as teachers, have any concerns about using i-Pads or digital technology then we should consider that our students are probably not having the same angst about taking those steps. Whilst our students aren't at this stage yet, maybe soon they will. Check out this You-Tube clip to see what one student in America is doing with his i-Pad!

Thanks to Chris for forwarding this list of K-5 iPad Apps According to Bloom's Taxonomy

I have downloaded some of the apps and tested them. I didn't test them all, I just tried the one's that I thought would have an application in the research process rather than the classroom.

Lifecards - Postcards
$1.99iPad and iPhone
I thought this app was a great, creative way to synthesise information. This could be used as a presentation tool in many different ways.

Strip Designer
$2.99iPad and iPhone
This is already installed on the iPods in Y5
darrow-questionbuilder-7.jpg
Question Builder for the iPad
$6.49iPad
This app is more expensive than the others and has a limited use. It would probably only be suitable for very young children or could be useful in adaptive ed. Not sure that it would have any particular classroom use. It is very repetitive (boring) and students aren’t actually creating anything by using it. It is quite a passive interactive tool (if that isn’t an oxymoron!)
There are other similar apps available from same developer such as sentence builder, language builder, story builder, preposition builder and conversation builder but I wasn’t game to try them!
darrow-confer-9.jpg
Confer
$15.49iPad and iPhone
Watch the video, I downloaded the free lite version to try it out. This is really a teaching aide but I can see that this could be used in a really creative way as a note-taking tool higher up the school. I will spend the money on the full version and try it out for research as well as teaching notes. Will keep you posted!
darrow-mentalcase-9.jpg
Mental Case Classroom Edition
FreeiPad and iPhone
Not sure about this app it seemed overly messy. The answers on the flash card weren’t always easy to read and some parts of words were obscured. I could live without the app and I’m glad it was free!! I shall probably delete it off my iPad.

    Student for iPad
    Free
    iPad
We have LanSchool installed on the computers in school. This app would integrate with that programme, in fact it doesn't work unless it is linked to the main school system. It may alleviate some of the worries some teachers and parents have about safely navigating "cyberworld". It also means that there are some creative ways of interacting with students whilst on-line in real time.

We have access to ClickView (usernames and passwords to be issued to everyone shortly). This app allows teacher chosen media to be viewed on tablet computers.
